Living A Life of Faith as a Believer
“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” — Hebrews 11:1 (ESV)
Faith is the foundation of our walk with God, a firm confidence in what we hope for and the assurance of things we cannot see, as Hebrews 11:1 defines it. It is not merely an intellectual belief but a deep, abiding trust in God's promises, even when circumstances challenge our understanding. We are called to live by faith, relying not on what we can see or understand, but on the promises of a God who is faithful and unchanging. This kind of faith does not come from our own strength; it is a gift from God, meant to be nurtured and developed as we grow in our relationship with Him.
Living by faith is about more than just believing in God; it's about trusting Him in every area of life. In 1 John 5:4, we are reminded that "everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world" — 1 John 5:4 (ESV) and that our faith is the victory that enables us to do so. Faith is the key to overcoming fear, doubt, and any obstacle that comes our way. It allows us to look beyond the challenges of life and see God’s greater plan at work. Our faith in Christ assures us that, no matter what the world throws at us, we are more than conquerors in Him.
Faith is something that grows as we hear and embrace God's Word. Romans 10:17 says, “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ” — Romans 10:17 (ESV). As we immerse ourselves in Scripture, our trust in God's promises deepens, and we learn to rely more fully on His guidance. Faith is not something we generate through our own effort or willpower; it is a gift that comes from God, and as Romans 12:3 reminds us, He has given each of us a measure of faith. Our responsibility is to steward that faith, allowing it to grow and flourish as we obey God and trust Him with our lives.
Faith is not just an abstract concept; it is something that can be seen in action. Just like a muscle, faith grows stronger as we exercise it. In 2 Thessalonians 1:3, Paul commends the Thessalonians for their growing faith, saying, "We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers, as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing" — 2 Thessalonians 1:3 (ESV). Just as physical strength increases through consistent use, so does our spiritual strength when we step out in faith. Every time we trust God, whether in big or small ways, our faith becomes more resilient, and we begin to see God’s faithfulness more clearly.
Living out faith means trusting God even when we don’t see immediate results. It is easy to believe in God when everything is going well, but true faith is tested in times of uncertainty and struggle. The life of Noah, as described in Hebrews 11, is an example of faith in action. Noah built an ark in obedience to God’s word, despite not knowing when the flood would come or how God would fulfill His promise. Similarly, we are called to act on our faith, trusting that God will bring His plans to fruition, even when we can’t yet see how.
Reflecting on our own lives, we can ask ourselves where God is calling us to take steps of faith. Are there areas where we have struggled to trust Him? Perhaps there are decisions or circumstances that require us to step out in faith, believing that God is faithful to His promises. Just as faith grows through hearing and acting on God’s Word, we can ask Him to strengthen our trust and help us see His hand at work in every situation.
In prayer, we can ask God to increase our faith and help us live out the confidence and assurance that comes from trusting Him. We can pray for the courage to take steps of faith, even when it feels uncertain or difficult, knowing that He will never fail us. As we grow in faith, we become more like Christ, and our lives become a testimony to His power and goodness.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of faith. Help me to trust You in every area of my life and to walk confidently in Your promises. Grow my faith as I hear and obey Your Word, and give me the courage to step out in obedience. May my life reflect Your love and truth to those around me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
