The Power of Choices ft. Jomon-John
"So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate" — Genesis 3:6 (ESV)
In life, we are constantly faced with decisions that shape the direction of our journey. From small, everyday choices to life-changing decisions, our choices have the power to impact not only our lives but also the lives of those around us. In Genesis 3:6, we read about the first choice made by humanity: Eve saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food, pleasing to the eye, and desirable for gaining wisdom. She took some, ate it, and gave some to Adam, who also ate. This choice, made in the face of temptation, had consequences that were felt throughout history. It serves as a powerful reminder that the choices we make, especially when we are swayed by temptation, can have far-reaching effects.
Yet, God doesn’t leave us in the aftermath of our mistakes. In Deuteronomy 30:15-20, He places before us the choice between life and death, blessings and curses, and urges us to “choose life.” This decision is not just about the present moment but has implications for our future. Our choices shape who we become and affect those who come after us. Just as Adam and Eve’s choice impacted all of humanity, the decisions we make today have the power to influence the generations to come. The question is, will we choose life, or will we allow our choices to lead us down a path of destruction?
Some decisions in life are monumental, like deciding whom to marry or where to live. Others seem smaller, like what we do with our time or the habits we form. However, as Joshua 24:15 challenges us, we must choose whom we will serve. This decision—whether to serve God or to follow our own desires—must be made consciously. Our daily decisions, even in the smallest moments, are part of a larger decision to live for God’s glory. In Luke 9:23, Jesus calls us to deny ourselves, take up our cross daily, and follow Him. This means that our choices are not just about our comfort or desires, but about aligning ourselves with God's will.
Every choice we make is an opportunity to either align with God’s purposes or to follow our own path. In 1 Kings 18:21, Elijah confronted the people of Israel, asking, “How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” — 1 Kings 18:21 (ESV). We, too, are faced with a similar choice. Will we waver between following our own desires or choosing God’s way? As we make decisions, we must ask ourselves whether our choices reflect our commitment to God, whether we are seeking His wisdom or relying on our own understanding.
Romans 8:4-8 reminds us that those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. The more we choose to align our lives with God’s will, the more we begin to live in the freedom and peace He promises. But when we choose to live according to the flesh, our choices lead us away from God’s best for our lives. The good news is that God is always inviting us to choose life, to choose His path, and to trust that He will guide us in every decision.
As we reflect on our own choices, we are invited to consider where we may need to surrender our decisions to God. What choices, both big and small, do we need to entrust to Him? How can we align our choices with God’s purposes, and what habits can we develop to ensure we are walking in His will? Choosing life is not just about one decision; it is a daily commitment to walk with God, trust His wisdom, and honor Him in everything we do.
In prayer, we can ask God to help us make choices that align with His will. We can ask Him to give us the strength to follow His leading, even when the path seems unclear or difficult. As we learn to make decisions in line with His Word and Spirit, we can trust that He will guide us toward life and peace.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the gift of choice and the freedom You give us to follow You. Help me to make decisions that honor You and align with Your will. Teach me to trust You in the big decisions and the small moments of everyday life. Guide my heart and mind so that I may choose life and walk in the path You have set before me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
