Praise in the Midst of a Storm
When we face trials and difficulties, it’s easy to become consumed by our circumstances.
Our minds focus on the struggles, and our hearts may grow weary. Yet in Psalm 34, David
offers us a different perspective: a call to praise. Even in the midst of overwhelming
challenges, we are invited to worship God—not just when things are going well, but
especially when the storm is raging. This practice of praise can be understood in three
ways: praising God in times of trouble, worship through surrender, and boasting in His
greatness.
In the midst of our struggles, it’s important to remember that God calls us to live lives of
praise. Worship becomes a shield against despair and discouragement. Rather than
allowing our circumstances to define us, we are encouraged to shift our focus from the
problem to the One who holds the answer. Psalm 34 reminds us to bless the Lord at all
times, to let His praise always be on our lips. No matter what is happening around us, we
can thank God for His faithfulness, knowing that He is always present and working in our
lives.
Praise is not about ignoring our difficulties but choosing to focus on God’s character and
promises despite them. Psalm 150:6 calls us to “Let everything that has breath praise the
Lord!” — Psalm 150:6 (ESV), which reminds us that praise is an act of faith—a choice to
honor God regardless of how we feel or what we see. When we are intentional about
praising God in difficult times, we begin to see beyond our immediate troubles and are
reminded of His greatness.
True worship, however, goes beyond words or actions; it is a posture of surrender. When
we say, “Lord, You are the Lord of my life,” we are submitting ourselves fully to His control
and care. Worship through surrender acknowledges that God is our source of strength and
our refuge in times of trouble. In Jeremiah 9:24, God declares, "but let him who boasts
boast in this, that he understands and knows me," — Jeremiah 9:24 (ESV). This kind of
worship doesn’t rely on our understanding of our circumstances but trusts in God’s perfect
wisdom. It’s a choice to believe that He is working all things together for our good, even
when we don’t have all the answers.
Rather than battling our circumstances on our own, we are invited to boast about God’s
greatness. 1 John 4:4 reminds us, “for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the
world” — 1 John 4:4 (ESV). When we boast in God, we are declaring His victory over every
trial and difficulty. Instead of focusing on the trial, we focus on the One who is greater than
the trial. Boasting in His greatness transforms our perspective, turning our battles into
testimonies of His power and love.
As we reflect on our own lives, it’s helpful to consider how we can shift our focus from our
problems to opportunities for praise. Think about ways that God has sustained you in the
past. How has He provided for you when you were uncertain about the future? Reflecting
on His faithfulness can help us see how praise becomes a powerful declaration of His
goodness and an act of trust in His ongoing work in our lives.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder to praise You in all circumstances. Help me to
keep a heart of gratitude, especially in difficult times. Teach me to see beyond my troubles
to Your strength and faithfulness. May my life reflect Your goodness, and may my worship
be a testimony of Your greatness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

God is worthy of praise no matter what we are going through or what is happening in the world. Circumstances continually change for good or bed, but God’s eternal mercy, faithfulness, power and love never change. He remains the same. Praising God in the storms of life overcomes the flesh and defeats the enemy.
Wow this message is so apt. God expects us to continually praise Him no matter what the circumstances are. Praise is a way to express our faith when times are tough. It is the language of victory and like today’s passage says, it helps us shift our focus from the problem to the person who has the solution. Perspective is key when we are confronted with spiritual challenges. When we focus on Gobin praise, He becomes way bigger than our challenges and our confidence grows. This year I will keep praising and worshiping without any pauses. Praise God!
