Hospitality in Action
“Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” — Matthew 28:16-20 (ESV)
In Matthew 28:16-20, Jesus gives His disciples the command to “go therefore and make disciples of all nations.” This is not a call for the disciples of that time only, but for all believers, including us today. The Great Commission is an invitation to go beyond our comfort zones and actively share the gospel, making hospitality more than a matter of opening our homes but also of opening our hearts to others. True hospitality in action means that we live intentionally, sharing Christ’s love with those around us, inside the church and beyond.
To carry out the mission of making disciples, it’s essential to surround ourselves with like-minded believers who can support and encourage us in our faith. In Matthew 28:16-20, Jesus gathers His disciples together before sending them out, reminding them of His authority and presence. Similarly, we cannot fulfill God’s call on our lives alone. In 2 Timothy 4:2, Paul urges Timothy to “preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching” — 2 Timothy 4:2 (ESV), which reminds us that our readiness to share the gospel comes from being deeply rooted in a community of believers who understand our calling and strengthen our faith. Mark 16:15 calls us to “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation” — Mark 16:15 (ESV) not only in the places where we feel comfortable but in all the places where God sends us—whether in our neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, or even on social media. Our mission field is vast, and we must be prepared to reach out to people wherever they are.
Stepping out in faith can often bring feelings of uncertainty, but part of our call to hospitality is trusting that God will provide for us as we walk in His mission. Whether it’s the resources we need, the strength to keep going, or the courage to step into the unknown, we can trust that God will equip us for the work He has given us. Trusting in God’s provision is a crucial part of the hospitality He calls us to, as it involves surrendering our plans to His and knowing that He will provide for every need. When we step out in faith, we can be confident that God will bless our efforts, whether in tangible or spiritual ways, and that our obedience will bear fruit in His perfect timing.
The command to “go and make disciples” extends beyond the church building; it is a call to take the gospel into every corner of our lives. We are not just called to evangelize in word but also in action. Mark 16:14-18 shows us that when we step out in faith, God’s power will work through us, and signs will follow those who believe. Our lives, our words, and our actions can become living testimonies of God’s goodness and power. One conversation or act of kindness can plant a seed that will change the course of someone’s life forever. Just as large evangelistic movements have seen millions come to Christ through faithful preaching, so too can we impact the world by sharing the love of Christ in our everyday interactions.
As you reflect on your own life, think about where God might be calling you to step outside your comfort zone. Are there people or places where you can intentionally share the gospel? Are you trusting God to provide the strength, resources, and courage you need to fulfill His mission? How can you live out hospitality by inviting others into your life, both through words and actions, and making disciples in the places where God has placed you?
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the privilege of being part of Your mission to make disciples. Help me surround myself with a community of believers who encourage and strengthen my faith. Give me the courage to step out of my comfort zone and trust that You will provide for every need. I want to be a faithful ambassador of Your love, sharing the gospel wherever You lead me. May my life be a reflection of Your power and grace, and may others come to know You through my words and actions. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
