Healing is in the Atonement

Healing is in the Atonement

"But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed"
— Isaiah 53:5 (ESV)

When Jesus went to the cross, He bore not only our sins but also our pain, sickness, and brokenness. Healing is not a distant hope but a present promise for those who believe in the atoning work of Christ. Isaiah’s prophecy reminds us that we are made whole by His sacrifice—a truth that echoes throughout Scripture. "with his wounds we are healed" is not just a poetic phrase; it is the reality that healing, in every sense, is part of the salvation that Jesus purchased for us on the cross.

The Bible consistently affirms that healing is an integral part of the atonement. In Isaiah 53:5, we are told that "with his wounds we are healed," and this promise is repeated and confirmed in 1 Peter 2:24, where Peter writes, "By His wounds you have been healed." — 1 Peter 2:24 (ESV). The shift from present to past tense in this verse signifies that Christ’s sacrifice on the cross completed our healing. This means that through His death and resurrection, healing is no longer something we are waiting for—it is something we can claim in the present. God’s love for us, demonstrated through His plan of redemption, assures us that we are no longer victims of sin and sickness but victors in Christ. Our healing, just like our salvation, is already secured in His finished work.

In Matthew 8:1-13, we see Jesus actively healing those who came to Him in faith. A leper approached Jesus and, in humility, asked, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” — Matthew 8:2-3 (ESV). This simple exchange reveals two important truths about healing: Jesus is both willing and able to heal, and our faith activates the power of God. Similarly, the centurion’s faith in Jesus’ ability to heal from a distance shows that the power of God transcends distance, time, and circumstance. Whether we are facing physical illness, emotional pain, or anxiety, we can come to Jesus with faith, knowing that He is still working miracles today.

Hebrews 4:12 reminds us that God’s Word is alive and powerful. As we meditate on and speak out the truth of Scripture—"with his wounds we are healed" and "The Lord sustains him on his sickbed" — Psalm 41:3 (ESV)—we align our hearts with God’s promises. Our words have power, and when we speak God’s Word over our lives, we are declaring victory over sickness, fear, and despair. Rather than letting our circumstances dictate our outlook, we can choose to speak life into them, saying, "I am healed in Jesus’ name."

It is also important to remember that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), and God desires for us to care for them. While we trust Him for healing, we are also called to steward our health. This involves making decisions that honor God by taking care of our physical and mental well-being. When we treat our bodies with care, we are recognizing that they are gifts from God, entrusted to us to honor Him. Stewardship of our health, then, becomes an act of worship.

As you reflect on this, consider how you can exercise your faith in trusting God for healing in your life. Do you believe that healing is part of God's promise to you? How can you speak God’s Word over your circumstances, and what steps can you take to care for your body as a temple of the Holy Spirit?

In prayer, ask God to strengthen your faith to receive the healing that is already yours in Christ. Thank Him for His finished work on the cross and for the promise of wholeness in every area of your life. Ask Him to teach you how to care for your body, and to help you stand firm in the truth of His Word as you trust in His healing power.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for the healing power that flows through the sacrifice of Jesus. I praise You for the promise of wholeness in every area of my life. Help me to stand firm on Your Word, speaking truth over my circumstances and trusting in Your unfailing love. Teach me to care for my body as Your temple and to live with faith and confidence in Your power to heal. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
