Take up the full armor of God

Take up the full armor of God

“Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm” — Ephesians 6:13 (ESV)

In our journey of faith, we are constantly reminded that our strength is not found in our own abilities, but in the power of God. The challenges of life can often feel overwhelming, but God equips us to stand firm through His Word. In Ephesians 6:13, Paul encourages us to “take up the whole armor of God”. This armor is not just a metaphor, but a practical spiritual tool that enables us to walk victoriously in Christ.

Paul’s words in Ephesians 5:17 remind us to “not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is” — Ephesians 5:17 (ESV). Living wisely means recognizing the spiritual battles we face and understanding that we are not fighting them in our own strength. Instead, we are called to live according to God’s wisdom, relying on His power, and putting on the full armor of God to stand firm. In Ephesians 2:10, For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” — Ephesians 2:10 (ESV). God has uniquely equipped us for His purposes, and He provides the armor we need to fulfill those purposes. This armor is a daily provision, a means by which we are empowered to live out the good works God has prepared for us.

Each piece of the armor has a specific function, equipping us for both defense and offense in our spiritual walk. The Belt of Truth, for example, is foundational to our walk with God. Without truth, we are vulnerable to deception. Truth keeps us grounded in God’s Word and in who we are in Christ. The Breastplate of Righteousness protects our hearts and reminds us that our righteousness is not our own but is given to us through Christ. The readiness of the Gospel of Peace helps us to go and share the good news of Christ with others, wherever we are. The Shield of Faith allows us to extinguish the fiery darts of the enemy, trusting in God’s promises to protect and provide for us. The Helmet of Salvation gives us the assurance that nothing can separate us from God’s love, and the Sword of the Spirit—the Word of God—empowers us to fight back against lies and falsehoods, standing firm in the truth.

But the armor is not enough on its own. We are also called to pray, as Paul reminds us in Ephesians 5:17 to live wisely and with full understanding of God’s will. Prayer is how we activate the armor of God and stay connected to His power. Through prayer, we align our hearts with God’s will, gain clarity on His purposes, and receive the strength we need to face the day. Prayer allows us to declare God's power over our lives, reinforcing our trust in His provision and protection.

As we reflect on our spiritual walk, it’s important to consider how we are applying the armor of God. Are we relying on our own strength, or are we turning to God daily for His strength? Is our faith firm enough to shield us from the enemy’s attacks? Take time to reflect on how well you’re putting on the armor each day and ask God to help you walk in His power.
Through prayer, we can ask God to help us receive every part of His armor, trusting that He will protect and strengthen us. We can also ask Him to help us stay connected to His will, so that we can walk confidently in the good works He has planned for us.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for the spiritual armor You have provided. Help me to receive every piece you have provided in Christ,  and trust in Your mighty power to protect and strengthen me. May I walk confidently in the good works You’ve prepared for me, and stand firm in Your Word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
