Serving Christ Through Our Work and Relationships

Serving Christ Through Our Work and Relationships

Scripture:
"With goodwill doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men."
— Ephesians 6:7 (NKJV)

Reflection:

What would change about the way we work, serve and relate to others if we truly believed that everything we do is ultimately an offering to God?

In Ephesians 6:5–8, Paul teaches that our service should flow from sincere hearts, not merely from a desire to impress those watching us. His instruction challenges us to see our daily responsibilities as opportunities to honour Christ.

It is easy to work diligently when a supervisor is present, when recognition is guaranteed or when promotion seems likely. But what happens when nobody is watching? Do we maintain the same commitment to excellence, honesty and responsibility?

Scripture calls us to a higher standard. Our integrity should not depend on supervision, and our diligence should not depend on applause.

For employees, this may mean arriving on time, fulfilling responsibilities faithfully, respecting workplace policies and refusing to misuse an employer's time or resources. For employers and leaders, it means exercising authority with fairness, compassion and accountability, remembering that we too answer to God.

This principle also extends into our spiritual relationships.

Hebrews 13:17 reminds believers that spiritual leaders carry responsibility for those entrusted to their care. We are encouraged to respect, support and cooperate with godly leadership. At the same time, leaders must remember that their authority is a sacred trust, not permission to control or exploit others.

Our highest authority remains Jesus Christ. We honour human leaders while testing their teachings and instructions against God's Word.

Whether at work, at home or in church, obedience begins with recognizing that we belong to God. Our responsibilities may seem ordinary, but they become meaningful when performed with faithfulness and love.

Perhaps the greatest test of our spiritual maturity is not how passionately we worship on Sunday, but how faithfully we live from Monday through Saturday.

When we serve others with integrity, humility and excellence, we are ultimately serving Christ.

Reflection Questions:

  • Do I demonstrate the same diligence when nobody is watching?
  • Am I honouring God through my attitude toward employers, colleagues and spiritual leaders?
  • What practical change can I make this week to reflect Christ more faithfully in my responsibilities?

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, teach me to honour You in every responsibility You have entrusted to me. Help me to work diligently, serve sincerely and treat others with respect. Remove dishonesty, pride and resentment from my heart. Give wisdom and humility to those in leadership, and help me remain faithful to Your Word above all else. May everything I do reflect Your character and bring glory to Your name. In Jesus' name, Amen.
