Mighty Man of Valor

Mighty Man of Valor

Scripture:
“And the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, ‘The Lord is with you, O mighty man of valor.’”
Judges 6:12

Reflection:

When God found Gideon, he was not standing on a battlefield. He was hiding in a winepress.

The winepress was the wrong place to thresh wheat. Wheat belonged on the threshing floor, exposed to the wind, where it could be properly separated from the chaff. Yet Gideon was hiding because years of Midianite oppression had convinced Israel that survival was safer than visibility.

Fear had become part of their identity. For seven years the Midianites had stolen their crops, plundered their harvests, and driven them into caves. Eventually Israel stopped expecting victory and learned to expect loss. Their circumstances had become their identity.

But when God appeared, He did not call Gideon what he was doing. He called him what he was becoming.

“Mighty man of valor.”
Gideon saw a frightened farmer. God saw a deliverer.
Gideon saw weakness. God saw courage.
Gideon saw his limitations. God saw His purpose.

Many of us live beneath our calling because we have allowed past disappointments to define us. We introduce ourselves by our failures, our family history, our weaknesses, or our fears. Yet God introduces us by His purpose.

God rarely starts by changing our circumstances. He starts by changing how we see ourselves. Before Gideon could defeat Midian, he had to stop identifying himself as a victim.

Reflection Questions:

  • What labels have I accepted about myself that God has never spoken?
  • Am I defining myself by my past experiences or by God's promises?
  • How would I live differently if I truly believed God was with me?

Prayer:

Father, help me see myself through Your eyes. Remove every false identity built on fear, failure, and limitation. Teach me to embrace who You say I am. Give me the courage to walk in the calling You have placed on my life. In Jesus' name, Amen.
