Stop Waiting by the Pool
Scripture:
"Jesus said to him, 'Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.'"
— John 5:8
Reflection:
Some seasons of life can quietly become places where we stop moving.
We are not physically stuck, but emotionally, spiritually, or mentally we remain by the same "pool," waiting for something to happen before we take the next step.
That was the condition of the man at the Pool of Bethesda.
For thirty-eight years he waited in the same place, believing that if only the water were stirred and if only someone helped him into the pool, his life would finally change.
When Jesus arrived, He did not begin by discussing the pool.
He challenged the man's thinking.
"Do you want to be healed?"
At first, the question almost sounds insensitive. Of course he wanted to be healed. Yet Jesus was addressing something deeper than his physical paralysis.
Thirty-eight years had shaped not only his body but also his mindset.
His identity had become intertwined with his condition.
Instead of answering "Yes," the man immediately explained why nothing had changed:
"I have no one to put me into the pool."
His hope rested on people.
His future depended on circumstances.
His expectation was tied to a tradition that had held him captive for decades.
How often do we do the same?
"If someone would notice me..."
"If this opportunity would finally come..."
"If circumstances would change..."
"If someone would help me..."
While God often uses people, He never intends our faith to rest in them.
Jesus bypassed the pool completely.
He never stirred the water.
He never waited for conditions to improve.
Instead, He invited the man into a completely different way of living.
"Get up. Pick up your mat. Walk."
The very thing that had carried him for years was now to be carried by him.
The place of defeat became a testimony of freedom.
Sometimes the miracle begins when we stop waiting for perfect conditions and respond to Christ's invitation to move in obedience.
Faith often looks like taking the first step before everything feels ready.
Reflection Questions:
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, forgive me for the times I have waited on circumstances instead of listening to Your voice. Break every mindset that has kept me trapped in fear, disappointment, or delay. Give me the courage to rise, obey, and walk into everything You have prepared for me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Reflection Questions:
- What "pool" have I been waiting beside?
- Have I allowed my circumstances to become part of my identity?
- What step of obedience is Jesus asking me to take today?
