From Consumer to Laborer
Scripture:
“Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves.”
— Luke 10:3
Reflection:
Every believer is called to receive from God, but no believer is called to remain only a consumer.
Jesus sent seventy-two ordinary disciples into the harvest. This assignment was not reserved for the original twelve apostles. It included others who were willing to respond when heaven recruited labourers.
The same invitation is extended to us.
Church is not only a place where we come to be encouraged, taught, prayed for, and strengthened. It is also the community through which God equips us to serve, reach others, and participate in His mission.
There is a place for each person in the harvest.
Some carry the sickle.
Some carry the basket.
Some transport what has been gathered.
Some preserve the harvest.
Some encourage the workers.
Some pray and prepare the way.
The roles may be different, but everyone has a part.
Jesus did not promise that the work would always be comfortable. He said He was sending them as lambs among wolves. This meant that they would encounter opposition, rejection, misunderstanding, and vulnerability.
Some homes would receive them. Others would reject them.
Their responsibility was not to control every response. Their responsibility was to go.
This is an important lesson for anyone who fears rejection. We often hold back because we are afraid that people will not listen, accept our invitation, appreciate our service, or recognize our contribution.
Jesus prepared His disciples for both acceptance and rejection. He taught them not to measure obedience by how others responded.
The success was in going.
God is recruiting people who are willing to leave convenience, step beyond comfort, and say, “Lord, send me.”
You may not feel qualified, but God is not recruiting based only on natural experience or ability. He qualifies those He calls. He is looking for willing sons and daughters who will pray, serve, invite, encourage, give, and carry the gospel into their world.
The question is not whether there is a place for you.
The question is whether you will respond.
Reflection Questions:
Prayer:
Father, thank You for calling me into Your harvest. I do not want to remain only a recipient of what others carry. Show me the place You have prepared for me to serve. Give me courage to move beyond comfort, endure rejection, and obey Your voice. Use my life to reach, strengthen, and disciple others for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection Questions:
- Have I been approaching church primarily as a consumer rather than a labourer?
- What fear, discomfort, or concern about rejection has kept me from serving?
- Where is God asking me to say, “Send me,” and take a practical step of obedience?
Prayer:
