What Your Treasure Reveals

What Your Treasure Reveals

Scripture:
"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
— Matthew 6:21 (ESV)

Reflection:

We often think our hearts determine where our money goes. Jesus says the reverse is also true. Where our treasure goes, our hearts quietly follow.

That is why He spoke so frequently about possessions. His concern was never about accumulating wealth or avoiding wealth. His concern was worship.

Every financial decision is a spiritual decision. Every purchase, every investment and every act of generosity is shaping our hearts toward something. We are either becoming more attached to God's kingdom or more attached to our own.

We are reminded that nothing we own belongs to us. We came into this world with nothing and will leave the same way. Everything we currently hold has been entrusted to us for a season. We are not owners. We are stewards.

That changes everything.

When I realise that my income belongs first to God, generosity stops feeling like loss. It becomes faithful stewardship.

When I realise that my home, career and resources are temporary assignments, I stop clinging to them so tightly.

When I realise that God's kingdom is eternal, investing in His work becomes one of the wisest investments I can ever make.

Jesus warned that we cannot serve both God and mammon because mammon constantly whispers the same lie: "Hold tighter. Protect yourself. If you give, you won't have enough."
Faith answers differently: "God is my source. If He provided yesterday, He will provide tomorrow."

Generosity is therefore much more than giving money. It is a declaration of trust. Every time we release what God has placed in our hands, we proclaim that our confidence rests in the Giver rather than the gift.

The question is not simply whether we give. The deeper question is this: What story does the way I handle my resources tell about the condition of my heart?

Reflection Questions:

  • If someone looked only at your calendar and your bank statement, what would they conclude you value most?
  • In what areas has money become a source of security rather than God?
  • What fears make generosity difficult for you?
  • How can you intentionally use your resources this week to advance God's kingdom rather than simply your own comfort?

Prayer:
Lord, search my heart and expose any area where money has begun to compete with You for my affection. Help me to remember that everything I have belongs to You. Teach me to live with open hands, generous hearts and eternal priorities. May the way I steward every resource declare that You alone are my Provider and my Treasure. In Jesus' name, Amen.
