The Bible: Study It, Apply It, Live It
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path."
— Psalm 119:105
We live in a world filled with information.
We can listen to podcasts, watch teachings online, read devotionals, follow Bible-reading plans, memorize verses, or study entire books of Scripture. All of these can help us grow. But there is an important question we need to ask ourselves:
Is God’s Word simply something we know or is it shaping the way we live?
During our recent Equip Night, we explored a simple but powerful invitation: Study the Bible and apply it.
Because God’s Word was never intended merely to fill our minds. It was given to guide our lives
Why Study the Bible?
The Bible gives us something that the noise of the world cannot: God’s truth and direction.
Psalm 119 describes God’s Word as a lamp for our feet and a light for our path. We may not always see the entire road ahead, but God gives us enough light to take the next step.
Scripture also helps us learn how to correctly handle truth, equips us for good works, enables us to discern what is true, and gives us endurance, encouragement, and hope.
The Bereans in Acts 17 provide a beautiful example. They eagerly received what they were being taught, but they also examined Scripture for themselves. They did not simply accept everything they heard, they went back to God’s Word.
That is an important habit for every follower of Jesus.
Don’t only depend on someone else’s sermon, devotional, social media post, or interpretation.
Open the Bible. Read it. Study it. Ask questions. Seek God.
Knowing the Word Is Only the Beginning
Bible study is important, but Scripture continually points us toward something more: obedience.
James 1 warns us not to be people who merely hear the Word but fail to do what it says.
Jesus illustrated the same truth in Matthew 7. He compared the person who hears His words and puts them into practice* to someone who builds a house on rock. Storms still come but the foundation holds.
Following Jesus does not mean we will never experience difficulties.
It means we are building our lives on something strong enough to sustain us when those difficulties come.
There is a big difference between knowing what Jesus said and allowing what Jesus said to change how we speak, forgive, love, serve, make decisions, handle conflict, manage our priorities, and respond to people.
Application turns information into transformation.
God’s Word Is Alive
The Bible is not an ordinary book.
Hebrews 4 describes the Word of God as alive and active, able to reach deeply into our hearts and reveal our thoughts and attitudes. The Equip Night teaching also reminded us that reading God’s Word cannot be separated from our relationship with Him.
We are not simply studying facts about God.
We are spending time with God.
And we do not approach Scripture alone. The presentation emphasized the connection between the Word of God and the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit teaches and leads us into truth and helps us understand spiritual truth in God’s Word.
That changes how we approach Bible reading.
Instead of simply asking:
“What does this passage say?”
We can also pray:
“Holy Spirit, help me understand what You are showing me. What needs to change in my life because of what I have read?”
Let the Word Dwell in You Richly
Colossians 3:16 gives us another challenge:
Let the Word of God dwell in you richly.
That leads to some important questions:
Am I consistent in studying God’s Word?
Am I applying what I read?
Do I genuinely value and prioritize Scripture?
This isn't about comparing ourselves with someone who has read the Bible ten times or knows hundreds of verses.
It is about recognizing where we are and choosing to move forward.
Start Where You Are
Maybe you have never read through the entire Bible.
Maybe you used to read consistently but have lost the habit.
Maybe you regularly listen to sermons but rarely open Scripture for yourself.
Start where you are.
Choose to prioritize God’s Word. Make time each day to read. Ask God to help you become consistent and to increase your desire for Scripture. One practical challenge from Equip Night was simply to begin reading Psalm 119 and make note of what God is speaking to you through it.
As you grow, take another step. Read verses in context. Explore different Bible translations. Follow a reading plan or choose a particular book to study. Journal what you are learning. Ask the Holy Spirit for insight. Bring together Scripture, prayer, worship, and time in God’s presence.
You don't have to become a Bible scholar overnight.
You simply need to keep showing up.
From Reading to Living
Our goal is not just to finish another chapter.
It is not to maintain a streak on a Bible app.
It is not even simply to know more verses.
Our desire should be to know God more deeply and allow His truth to shape our lives.
Study the Word.
Meditate on the Word.
Pray through the Word.
And most importantly live the Word.
Because when God's Word moves from the pages of our Bible into the decisions of our everyday lives, we begin to experience what it means to build our lives on a foundation that lasts.
Start where you are. Keep moving forward. Let His Word dwell in you richly.
Here are the slides and the full recording for you to revisit, reflect on, and share with others.
