It's Not About Me
Scripture:
"On this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it."
— Matthew 16:18
Reflection:
One of the greatest shifts that can happen in a believer's life is moving from asking, "What can the church do for me?" to asking, "What is Jesus building, and how can I participate?"
When Jesus declared, "I will build My church," He was making something profoundly clear: the Church is His idea, His project, and His passion.
It is not built on personalities, gifted leaders, or impressive ministries. It is built upon the revelation of who Jesus Christ is. That revelation becomes the foundation upon which every healthy local church is established.
This changes how we see church.
We are not joining someone's ministry. We are joining Heaven's mission.
That means our attendance is not simply about receiving. Our gifts are not merely for personal fulfillment. Our finances, our time, our encouragement, our prayers, and our acts of service all become part of what Christ Himself is building.
The sermon reminds us that the local church is one of the few communities that primarily exists for people who are not yet part of it.
Its mission reaches beyond its members.
Every chair set up. Every child cared for. Every prayer offered. Every song sung. Every conversation after the service. Every unseen act of faithfulness contributes to a foundation that future generations will stand upon.
Those who serve in the early days of any work often never receive the applause that later generations enjoy. Yet Heaven sees differently.
God delights in those who quietly lay foundations.
The temptation is to evaluate church through the lens of personal preference:
"Am I being fed?"
"Do I like this?"
"Does this benefit me?"
But mature disciples begin asking different questions:
"Lord, where do You want me to serve?"
"What have You entrusted to me?"
"How can I strengthen what You are building?"
When our lives become centered on Christ's mission rather than our own comfort, we discover something beautiful.
Serving no longer feels like obligation.
It becomes worship.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You that Your Church belongs to You. Forgive me when I have made church primarily about my own preferences or comfort. Help me to see Your greater purpose and give me a willing heart to serve faithfully wherever You have placed me. May my life strengthen what You are building for Your glory. Amen.
