When God Brings You to the End of Yourself


Scripture:
“And he believed the Lord, and He counted it to him as righteousness.”
— Genesis 15:6


Reflection:

Abraham had many good works he could have presented before God.

When God told him to leave his father’s house, he obeyed. He travelled through unfamiliar and dangerous territory without knowing exactly where he was going. He built altars, worshipped God, rescued Lot, defeated kings, and gave a tithe to Melchizedek.

By human standards, Abraham had an impressive spiritual record.

Yet when the deepest desire of his heart remained unanswered, Abraham began to reason from what he could see. He had no child, time was passing, and the promise appeared increasingly impossible. He suggested that Eliezer, a servant in his house, could become his heir.

Abraham was trying to produce a human solution for a divine promise.

God responded by bringing him outside and telling him to look toward the heavens.

“Count the stars, if you are able to count them.”

This was not merely a beautiful illustration. It was an invitation for Abraham to come to the end of his own ability.

If Abraham could count the stars, perhaps he could measure the promise. If he could calculate it, perhaps he could control it. But the stars were beyond his ability to number.

God was showing him that the promise would never be fulfilled by Abraham’s strength, calculations, achievements, or religious record.

Abraham did not begin counting.

He believed.

That was the turning point.

The moment Abraham stopped trying to produce the promise and began trusting the One who made the promise, God counted his faith as righteousness.

There are moments when God allows us to reach the limits of our wisdom, strength, and effort. We may have prayed, worked, planned, obeyed, and waited, yet still find ourselves facing something we cannot fix.

This is not always evidence that God has abandoned us.

Sometimes it is the place where He is teaching us to believe.

As long as we can explain everything through our own effort, we may continue relying on ourselves. But when God brings us before something as uncountable as the stars, we are invited to surrender control.

Faith begins where self-sufficiency ends.

Abraham’s righteousness did not come because he had performed perfectly. His own story included fear, failure, wrong decisions, and moments of doubt. Yet God credited righteousness to him because he believed.

God is still calling us to this kind of trust.

He is not asking us to pretend that the impossible is easy. He is asking us to believe that He is greater than what is impossible for us.

Your future is not limited by what you can count.

Your promise is not limited by what you can produce.

Your life is not sustained merely by how much you can achieve.

Look again toward the heavens.

The God who made the stars is faithful to fulfil His word.



Reflection Questions:

• Where am I trying to create a human solution for something God has asked me to trust Him with?
• What situation has brought me to the limit of my own strength or understanding?
• What would it look like for me to stop counting and simply believe God?

Prayer:

Father, bring me to the place where I no longer depend on my own strength, calculations, or achievements. Forgive me for trying to control what only You can fulfil. Like Abraham, help me to look beyond my limitations and believe Your word. I place every promise, delay, and unanswered question into Your hands. Let my confidence rest in Your faithfulness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
