A Life Bigger Than Me
Scripture:
"Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."
— Matthew 6:33 (ESV)
Reflection:
One of the subtle dangers of the Christian life is that we can become so consumed with building our own lives that we slowly neglect God's kingdom. We may not intend to do so. We simply become busy. Careers need attention. Bills need to be paid. Families need to be cared for. Before long, our prayers, our schedules and even our finances revolve almost entirely around us.
This was the condition of the returned exiles in Haggai's day. After years of hardship in Babylon, they naturally focused on rebuilding their own homes and securing their own futures. Yet while their houses flourished, God's house remained neglected. Through the prophet, God invited them to "consider your ways." Their constant struggle, endless labour and lack of satisfaction were symptoms of a deeper problem. They had made their own priorities greater than God's.
The issue was never that God was against their success. In fact, He had already promised prosperity. His desire was that His people would flourish. But their prosperity was never meant to terminate on themselves. It was meant to become a channel through which His kingdom would advance.
The same principle still speaks today. God blesses us not merely so we can live comfortably, but so we can participate in what He is doing on the earth. Our careers, businesses, resources, gifts and influence are all opportunities to serve His purposes.
The question is not whether God wants you to prosper. The question is whether your prosperity is serving His kingdom or only your own ambitions.
A kingdom-minded believer asks a different question each day: "Lord, how can my life today advance Your purposes?" That simple shift changes everything. When God's kingdom becomes our first pursuit, our work gains eternal significance and our resources become instruments of His grace.

Father, forgive me for the times I have become consumed with building my own life while neglecting what matters to You. Help me to seek Your kingdom first. May every gift, opportunity and resource You have entrusted to me become a tool for advancing Your purposes on the earth. Let my life bring glory to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
