Koinonia Fellowship | Walking in the Light with God and Others

Scripture:

God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. - 1 John 1:5–7 (NIV)

Reflection:

When we hear the word fellowship in a church setting, we typically think of sharing life with Christian friends, but true Biblical fellowship also involves God. Koinonia is the Greek word for fellowship. Koinonia fellowship is two way, both vertical with God and horizontal with others. We can’t have one without the other; we need both in order to grow and mature spiritually. God made us for an ongoing spiritual connection with Him and others through the Holy Spirit.

We were created for fellowship no matter what is happening in our lives. Unfortunately, when we experience a hard season or we are struggling with sin, we can sometimes slip into a dark place spiritually, mentally and emotionally. When this happens, God feels distant and we tend to isolate from others. It is a dangerous place to be like a slippery slope. We can still be busy, fulfilling responsibilities and doing good things but it is like we are going through the motions; our hearts are far from God and we feel disconnected from others. Outwardly we may look okay, but on the inside, we are in a battle.

The good news is that Jesus made the way for us to freely walk in the light and enjoy continued fellowship with God and others. When you realize that you are in a dark place, draw near to God, talk honestly to Him and someone you trust and ask for prayer. Humbling ourselves and being honest when we are struggling is never easy, but repentance and transparent conversations are gifts from God. He promises to forgive, heal and lift us up so that our two-way fellowship can be restored.

As we launch our Open Homes at Mountain Springs Church, you are invited to join a group to support you on your spiritual journey. If you are unable to join a group in this season, consider someone that you can meet with for regular fellowship, encouragement and prayer. Prioritizing time with God and others is an important discipline that helps us keep walking in the light with God and others.

Reflection Questions:

  • Do I prioritize koinonia fellowship with God and others?
  • Who do I trust that I could honestly talk with if I am struggling?
  • Am I consistently walking in the light with God and others?

Prayer:

Lord thank you that you made the way for me to walk in the light and to experience koinonia fellowship. Help me prioritize my time for regular fellowship with you and others. Show me who I can grow deeper with through consistent fellowship, speaking truth in love and prayer. I want to walk in the light with you and others and make a difference. In Jesus name, Amen.
